Daimohk chechen dancers

14th May 2003

Dear members,
This may be of interest:

CHECHEN DANCERS RETURN TO ENGLAND

Daimohk, a Chechen children?s dance ensemble, returns to England in June
as part of a European tour sponsored by the Centre for Peace and Community
Development (CPCD).

CPCD was established by Quakers during the 1994-6 Chechen War, in response
to the needs of its desperate civilian population. CPCD, a
non-governmental humanitarian organisation of around 300 people, led by a
UK-based team of 4, is providing psychosocial and humanitarian assistance,
education and peacebuilding initiatives to the victims of this deadlocked
war.

Ramzan Akhmadov, former star of the Chechen National Ballet, directs the
exceptional children of Daimohk in the traditional dances of the Caucasus
region, from graceful, kaleidoscopic formations to energising acrobatics,
somersaults and sword-throwing. These dynamic performances are the most
remarkable message to come out of a war zone. Daimohk are performing at
the following venues:

26 June 7.30 Oxford Town Hall 01865 305305
27 June 7.30 The Drum, Birmingham 0121 333 2426/7
2 July 7.30 Budehaven School, Cornwall 01288 381799
4-5 July 7.30 Barbican, Plymouth 01752 267131
8-10 July 7.45 Riverside Studios, Hammersmith 020 8237 1111

CPCD aims, with this tour, to raise sufficient funds to provide Daimohk
with new dance shoes, costumes, a tour bus, and to rebuild their bomb
damaged dance hall in Grozny. Tickets are priced £4-£15.

With best wishes
