MIRROR
Dir. Andrei Tarkovsky, Russia, 1975, 108 mins, Russian / English
Subtitles, No Cert. A Contemporary films Release

'One of the most hauntingly beautiful films… ever seen' DVD Times
'A reflection of Tarkovsky's haunted soul' Filmref.com

A central work in Russian director Andrei Tarkovsky's oeuvre, both
figuratively and literally, the autobiographical Mirror is a first-person
journey back to a childhood revisited by Aleksei, a middle-aged Moscow
intellectual. Sick and bedridden the film unfolds through the eyes of his
boyhood self (Ignat Daniltsev). His memories of his mother provide a
counterpoint to his present relationship with his estranged wife Natalya,
while in the figure of the absent father he recognizes a parallel with his
relationship
with his own son. Tarkovsky uses his father Arsenii's poetry to invoke the
past, bringing it to life in a series of shots and sequences
unrivalled in their emotionally direct poignancy. A fiercely personal
story, that also allows a profound insight into the Russian experience.
Best experienced on the big-screen.
