HERMITAGE ROOMS SPECIAL LECTURE
Monday 22 May at 6.30pm
Kenneth Clarke Lecture Theatre, Courtauld Institute of Art
'Royal Sèvres in Russia: French porcelain in the Hermitage Museum' by
Rosalind Savill, Director of the Wallace Collection.
From the Empress Catherine II to her son Paul and 19th-century
enthusiasts, porcelain from the French Royal factory at Sèvres has been
commissioned, collected and treasured in St. Petersburg. This talk will
look at the myriad of wonderful examples in the Hermitage collections,
which have recently been the subject of a special exhibition.
Rosalind Savill has another treasure trove of Sèvres in the Wallace
collection and is one of the best known authorities on the factory’s
history and its products. She has been behind the scenes at the Hermitage
and studied porcelains that are normally tucked away in cupboards and not
on view to the public – as well as the star pieces on show in the
galleries. The lecture promises a unique insight into imperial
collecting.
