A collaboration between the Courtauld Institute of Art Research Forum, the
UK Friends of the Hermitage and the Ben Uri Gallery, Born in Russia
explores the work of a number of important 20th century artists who were
born in Russia but made their careers in the West.

The study day seeks to highlight wider issues of aesthetic identity and
the chosen artists’ interaction with modernism in their new countries –
Western Europe and the United States – in which the bulk of their art was
created. In the present age of globalisation, the core issues that Born in
Russia examines – nationality, selfhood, disjunction and the creative
interchange between nations and continents. A range of artists from
Kandinsky and Soutine to Nevelson and Rothko will be covered. Speakers
include: David Anfam (Freelance art historian and Phaidon Press),
Shulamith Behr (Courtauld Institute of Art), Susan Chevlowe (Jewish
Theological Seminary of America), Nathalie Hazan-Brunet (Musée d'Art et
d'Historie du Judaïsme, Paris), Jeffrey Hoffeld (New York Studio School),
Sonia Kudriatseva (State Hermitage Museum), Christina Lodder (Edinburgh
University), Didier Schulmann (Centre Georges Pompidou), Karen Wilkin (New
York Studio School), Sarah Wilson (Courtauld Institute of Art)
