Translator needed for Shostakovich's films

9th June 2006

Dear all,
The Barbican and Shostakovish Society need a translator for Shostakovich's
films. See below. Will those interested please get in touch with Lewis
Owens.

Best wishes
Anna

In association with the UK Shostakovich Society the Barbican Cinema is
mounting the largest retrospective of Shostakovich's film work ever seen
in the UK. The season of thirteen films, ranging throughout his career,
includes eight UK premieres and most of the other films have not seen here
for decades. The season will run from 23 September to 10 December 2006.
For details of the season, visit the DSCH Journal website
http://www.dschjournal.com/events/dsevents.htm#shosfilm

The UK Shostakovich Society, who have provided the films, is also
organising the subtitling of the films and is looking for translators to
take this work on. Though the budget for the project is very limited,
translators will hold the copyright on their work and receive a VHS or DVD
of the film, tickets to the season and one year's free membership of the
UK Shostakovich Society. With this you will receive two copies of the DSCH
Journal (around 80 pages of articles and reviews) and access to discounts
on Shostakovich concerts and events including Centenary Reflections, the
conference being organised by the UK Shostakovich Society at Fitzwilliam
College Cambridge. For details of the conference, see
www.shostakovich-uk.com.

Your work will be credited both on screen and in the programme notes that
accompany each screening. Where possible we will also arrange residual
payments for their use in future screenings. As well as the film itself,
in many cases we will be able to provide supplementary material such as
printed scenarios which may both make the work easier and prove
interesting in themselves.

For more information and details of the individual films, including plot
outlines and an indication of the amount of work involved please contact
