ANDREY PLATONOV
AT THE
LONDON REVIEW BOOKSHOP
14 BURY PLACE
LONDON WC1 A2J
Thursday 29th June at 7.00 pm

The evening (arranged by Academia Rossica) begins with a talk on ANDREY
PLATONOV entitled “Without Food or God” by Robert Chandler. This will be
followed by a performance of Robert Chandler’s English translation of
Platonov’s “14 Little Red Huts”, directed by Noah Birksted-Breen.

“Andrey Platonov is more and more often seen as the greatest Russian
prose-writer of the last century. As well as novels and stories, he wrote
a number of plays and film scripts. The Fourteen Little Red Huts (1932),
set in a famine-struck collective farm near the Caspian Sea, includes
satire as sharp as Brecht at his sharpest. At the same time, both in its
structure and in the brilliant absurdist poetry of its dialogue, it
anticipates the work of Beckett and Ionesco. Platonov’s peasants are
orphans; both Mother and Father, both earth and heaven, have been taken
away from them; all they have left is the webs of delusion that can be
spun from words.” Robert Chandler

Robert Chandler has both co-translated the play and directed a previous
Russian-language production. His co-translation of Platonov’s short
novel, Soul, was shortlisted for the 2005 Academia Rossica Translation
Prize; he is also the translator of Vasily Grossman’s novel, Life and
Fate, and the editor of Russian Short Stories from Pushkin to Buida. Noah
Birksted-Breen has both translated and produced several contemporary
Russian plays, including Oleg Bogaev’s Russian National Mail.

Tickets, price £6 (£2 discount to Academia Rossica subscribers), are
