LESLEY CHAMBERLAIN on the subject of her book, 'The Philosophy Steamer'.
In the
autumn of 1922, Lenin personally drew up a list of some 220 'undesirable'
intellectuals – mostly philosophers, academics, scientists and journalists
– to
be deported from the country. Two ships sailed from Petrograd that
autumn
taking 70 of these eminent men and their families into permanent exile.
Lesley
Chamberlain is a writer and reviewer distinguished for her wide-ranging
work
from travel to philosophy. Her most recent book is ‘Motherland: A
philosophical
History of Russia’.
