Sergei Bondarchuk's extraordinary, faithful adaptation of Tolstoy's epic
novel about the lives of two aristocratic Russian families, set amidst the
turmoil of Napoleon's advance on Moscow.
Five years in production, Bondarchuk's masterpiece is an awesome,
breathtaking example of the art of film making.
Twenty thousand extras were used during the famous Battle of Borodino
scenes to create 'the most magnificently spectacular battle scenes ever
filmed' (Leslie Halliwell).
Sublime performances by Ludmila Savelyeva, Vyacheslav Tikhonov and
Bondarchuk himself complement an astonishing filmic achievement which was
awarded the Best Foreign Film Oscar in 1968.
USSR 1967 Dir. Sergei Bondarchuk 429min.
The Waterside Café on Level G and the Balcony Bistro on Level 1 are open
for light meals or dinner between the two performances.
