TANEYEV FESTIVAL: CHORAL CONCERT OF RUSSIAN CHURCH MUSIC PLANNED FOR
FEBRUARY

The Taneyev Festival 2006-2007 will continue in London on 4 February 2007
with a concert of Russian Church music from the 17th to 20th centuries
performed by choirs from Amsterdam and London. Several works will receive
their UK premieres.
The Oktoich Chamber Choir from Amsterdam was created in 1996. It has given
many concerts in the Netherlands and Russia, and participated in the
Gergiev Festival in Rotterdam in 2004. It will be joined by the Male Choir
of the Russian Orthodox Cathedral in London. Established in 2003, the
latter choir was the winner of the International Festival of Orthodox
Music in Poland in 2005.
The choirs will be conducted by their respective founders, Alena
Ovsyannikova and Evgeny Tugarinov. Alena Ovsyannikova studied Church music
at the St. Petersburg Theological Academy and has been choirmistress of
St. Nicolas in Amsterdam since 1990. Evgeny Tugarinov holds a doctorate of
music from the Moscow Conservatory and is choirmaster of the Russian
Orthodox Cathedral in London.
Soloists will include the young operatic soprano Ksenia Jones, the tenor
Andrei Valikov and Protodeacon Alexander Ageykin (bass) from the Cathedral
of Christ the Saviour in Moscow. Several members of the former Chamber
Choir of the St. Tikhon Theological Institute from Moscow will also
participate.
Prior to the concert, the Male Choir will sing the Liturgy composed by
Sergei Trubachev (d. 1995) in the Sunday Divine Liturgy service at the
Russian Orthodox Cathedral of the Dormition and All Saints, 67 Ennismore
Gardens, London SW7 1NH. The service of Divine Liturgy with reading of the
Hours commences at 10:00 AM on Sunday 4 February.
The Taneyev Festival 2006-2007, organized by the Russian Music Company
Ltd, is designed to commemorate the 150th anniversary of the birth of the
Russian composer Sergei Taneyev (1856-1915), pupil of Tchaikovsky, teacher
of Rachmaninov and other composers and a key figure in the development of
Russian music. The festival aims to make his music better known in the
United Kingdom and to present talented Russian musicians to UK audiences.
The festival began in November 2006 with concerts of chamber music and
songs by the Russian Mozarteum chamber ensemble from Moscow. Patrons
include Baroness Smith of Gilmorehill, Steven Isserlis, Sergei Leiferkus,
Professor Roman Lebedev, the Embassy of the Russian Federation in the UK,
and A.S. Sokolov, Minister of Culture of the Russian Federation.
