CATRIONA KELLY. Writing the History of Russian Childhood.
A talk on researching and writing her book, to be published in the summer
of
2007, and a sketch of the material involved. Her most recent book
Comrade
Pavlik, the Rise and Fall of a Soviet Hero investigated the murder of
Pavlik
Morozov and the subsequent trial of the accused and how Stalin's regime
turned
Pavlik into a hero designed to produce good Soviet citizens. Catriona
Kelly is
Professor of Russian at the University of Oxford and a Fellow of New
College.

TUESDAY 1 MAY. 7 for 7.30
SASHA DUGDALE. Elena Shvarts is one of Russia's foremost poets. There
will be
a talk and reading of her work in Russian and English translation. Sasha
Dugdale is a poet and translator and recently won a translation prize from
the
Stephen Spender Trust for her translations of Elena Shvarts. Her second
collection The Estate will be published in 2007 by Carcanet/Oxford Poets.
She
has translated numerous plays for the Royal Court, including Plasticine
by
Vassily Sigarev (ES Award for Most Promising Playwright) and Terrorism by
the
Presnyakov Brothers.
