A Turkmen friend has just published a book, in Russian, on the famous
Akhal-Teke horse of Turkmenistan. The title in Russian is
Ближе Брата
(Closer than a Brother). If you think it would be of interest to
GB-Russia members I attach a short resume and details of where to obtain
it.

Regards,
Alison Nunn

Riding the four thousand-year road of Turkmen history
on Akhal-Teke horseback.

This is the first work to attempt an objective study of the origin and
evolution of the oldest domesticated breed of horse – the Akhal-Teke. The
book covers a four-thousand-year period, from the first appearances of
horses on the territory of today’s Turkmenistan to the present day. The
author analyses the myths, legends and ancient epics, the works of
archaeologists and historians, the testimonies of travellers from various
countries and periods regarding the habits and customs of the different
people who have inhabited the area. In so doing, the author draws a
picture of an unchangeable union between two equal partners – the
Akhal-Teke horse and his master.

The majority of the testimonies of travellers mentioned in this book have
never before been published in Russian and are given in the author’s
translation. The book is illustrated by Alexei Glukharev and with old
engravings
