Join us for the last in a series of talks from publishers Odyssey, on the
fascinating Stans of Central Asia. This event on Tajikistan and the High
Pamirs is led by expert author Huw Thomas and Zarrina Muhammadieva.
Fringed by the two great rivers of Central Asia, the Oxus and the
Jaxartes, Tajikistan can boast not only of breathtaking mountain scenery,
but also of 3,000 years of history. Originally the home of the Sogdians,
the famous trading peoples of the Silk Road, in more recent times the
country was at the heart of the 19th-century 'Great Game'.
The authors describe Tajikistan's unparalleled opportunities for trekkers,
provides expert mountaineering advice and specialist insights on wildlife,
botany, geology and archaeology. The comprehensive coverage of culture,
music and ethnic traditions is tantalising.
Huw Thomas was programme director of the Aga Khan Health Service in
Tajikistan from 1999 to 2003, based in Khorag, capital of the Pamirs. He
has returned frequently to Tajikistan. Zarrina Muhammadieva is a
contributor to the Tajikistan book and is a specialist on Tajik-Persian
literature and the folk traditions of Tajikistan. She worked for the Aga
Khan for many years.
Also on the night will be the chance to enter a raffle to win a holiday in
Uzbekistan! The prize, courtesy of Sundowners Overland, is to be given
away on the last evening.
