An evening dedicated to the poetry of Anna Akhmatova and the music of
Alexander Scriabin. The evening will be introduced by David Brummell, who
will explain the significance of Akhmatova’s meeting with Sir Isaiah
Berlin and why both Alla Gelich who will read the poems in Russian
(English text will be provided) and the pianist Nadia Giliova were
inspired by the music of Scriabin, and so made it their choice to
accompany Anna Akhmatova’s dramatic poetry.
It will focus on the two meetings which Akhmatova had in November 1945 and
January 1946 with Sir Isaiah Berlin – “the Guest from the Future”. These
meetings were both the cause of a series of fateful events in Akhmatova’s
life and the source of her creativity over the next 15 years. Alexander
Scriabin who tragically died at the height of his career, and could
himself be described as a “Guest from the Future”, because of his advanced
approach to musical composition.
Nadia Giliova has been a prize-winner at a number of national and
international competitions, including the International Prokofiev
Competition in Moscow, the Petrozavodsk International Piano Competition
and the 2003 Grieg international Piano Competition in Oslo. Since her
English debut in 2002, Nadia has performed at a number of important
venues, festivals and music series across Great Britain. She played “The
Seasons” again at The Wigmore Hall on 11th July 2008.
