Pushkin's Love Lyrics
PUSHKIN CLUB PROGRAMME
Language: In Russian with English translation
Another evening of poetry and music by Alla Gelich and Nadia Giliova. This
time the theme is Pushkin’s love lyrics. Alla Gelich will recite Pushkin’s
most popular love poems, which were set to music by various Russian
composers. After each poem Nadia Giliova will play the piano arrangement
of the corresponding song written to Pushkin’s words. Most of this music
will be heard in this country for the first time.
English translations will be provided with the programme. The evening will
be introduced by David Brummell, who will outline the profound influence
which Pushkin had not only on Russian music but beyond, and explain how
the poems and accompanying piano music were chosen.
Alla Gelich, our reader, is a long-standing member of the Pushkin Club,
and has recited Russian poetry on numerous occasions – in Great Britain,
Russia, Belgium, Holland and Germany.
Nadia Giliova is a graduate of the Gnessin Academy of Music in Moscow and
the Royal Academy of Music, London, and has been a prize-winner at a
number of national and international competitions, including the
International Prokofiev Competition in Moscow. She has performed at a
number of important venues and festivals throughout Great Britain,
including The Wigmore Hall, where in June 2008 she played Tchaikovsky’s
“The Seasons”. She also performed this piece at the Mandelstam/Tchaikovsky
evening at the Pushkin Club in January 2008.
David Brummell is a long-standing member of the Pushkin Club and a trustee
of Pushkin House.
