Vasily Grossman Talk

30th September 2010

Dear Members and Friends,

Robert Chandler will be talking (in English) about the multi-talented
writer Vasily Grossman (1905-1964)whose career as a war correspondent took
him from the Briansk and Central fronts of 1941 to Stalingrad and thence
to final victory in the ruins of Berlin in 1945. He composed 'The Hell of
Treblinka', a harrowing account of the Nazi concentration camp, recently
translated by Robert in his new collection of stories and other pieces by
Grossman, just published. As a writer, Grossman became embroiled in many
bitter struggles with the Soviet regime from 1946 until his death, on
account of his novels and other prose writing, which went contrary to
official ideology.
Robert Chandler is one of our finest translators of Russian into English
and his great talent has been recognized by the many prizes and
commendations he has won. He will be bringing along some of his books for
sale to our members, so please come armed with cash if you want to buy
copies of his fine translations and have then signed.
The Committee very much look forward to seeing on Monday 4 October at 6.30
for 7 pm in Pushkin House. Please come and support us!
Best wishes,
David Holohan.
