Holocaust Memorial Day – Thursday, January 27, 2011
You are cordially invited to join the Trustees of the Soviet Memorial
Trust Fund at events marking Holocaust Memorial Day (HMD) on January 27
organised in co-operation with Southwark Council. HMD coincides with the
anniversary of the liberation of Auschwitz by the Red (Soviet) Army in
1945.
The Mayor of Southwark, children from local schools, representatives of
the CIS Embassies in London, British WWII veterans, and other
organisations supporting the SMTF will be present. Members of the public
are welcome to participate.
10.30 – 11.00 Gather in the Cinema of the Imperial War Museum, Lambeth
Road, London SE1 6HZ. Refreshments will be served.
11.00 – 11.20 Southwark Council’s commemoration on this year’s HMD theme
of “Untold Stories”.
11.20 Proceed with the Mayor of Southwark to the nearby
Geraldine Mary Harmsworth Park.
11.30 – 12.00 Act of Remembrance, led by SMTF Chairman Philip Matthews, at
the Soviet War Memorial and Southwark Council’s Holocaust Memorial Tree.

You may also be interested to know that the Imperial War Museum has
several events organised around the period of HMD, including a lecture by
historian Ben Shephard. Further details can be obtained by contacting the

there is a permanent Holocaust Exhibition at the IWM which opened to the
public in June 2000 and has received over 2 million visitors since then.
Admission to the Museum and the Holocaust Exhibition is free.
