Dear Members and Friends,
GB-Russia Society and Pushkin House are holding a joint special event,
supplementary to our planned programme.
We were notified by the publisher that the eminent American scholar and
writer Professor Stephen Cohen will be in London for a short period only
for the British launch of his new book 'The Victims Return: Survivors of
the Gulag after Stalin'.
We thought that this opportunity was too good to miss, so we are hosting a
joint event and Professor Cohen will speak on Wednesday 9 March, 2011 in
Pushkin House at the usual time of 6.30 for 7 pm.
Vanity Fair recently described Professor Cohen and this work thus:
'Political historian Stephen F. Cohen spent the better part of 35 years
researching and writing his latest book, 'The Victims Return: Survivors of
the Gulag After Stalin'. Part historical account, part personal memoir,
Cohen’s book chronicles the post-liberation experience of the prisoners
who managed to survive Stalin’s brutal Gulag, from their release in the
late 1950s to the present. With first-hand accounts from countless
victims, Cohen’s work places him in the rare position of being both
intellectual observer and active participant in the political history of
modern Russia. A professor of Russian Studies and History at NYU and
Professor Emeritus at Princeton University, Cohen is also a frequent
commentator on television and a contributor to The Nation, where his wife
Katrina vanden Heuvel is editor and publisher.'
This is a rare opportunity to hear one of the world's leading scholars.
I have also arranged with the publisher for Professor Cohen's book to be
available for purchase and signing at a special price for us on the night
of his talk.

Hope to see you there! Please book soon for a place, as we expect the
demand for tickets will be high.
