Vysotsky Without Guitar

Pushkin Club, 7.30 pm, Thursday, 14th March 2013 – in Russian and English

Vladimir Vysotsky (1938-1980) was one of the outstanding creative artists of Soviet Russia in the 1960s and 1970s. Singer, song-writer, poet and actor, he gave voice to what many felt but could not express and was immensely popular in his lifetime. His career had an immense and enduring effect on Rusian culture.

Alla Gelich will recite 25 of Vysotsky’s songs (English translations will be provided) and together with the audience will try to find out whether his texts can stand on their own without the music and how relevant they are in today’s Russia.

A discussion is planned (in English and Russian), which will focus on these two topics. There might be a vote on these two questions at the end.

Introduction in English by David Brummell.
