Ballet dress rehearsal on 5 August

20th August 2013

This is an email from Daniel Salbstein to those who came to the Sleeping Beauty dress rehearsal on August 5th:

“This year we received applications for 58 seats – more than ever before. We  are normally allocated just 40 seats, because the Bolshoi and Mariinsky Ballet  Companies are not keen to have many people in the audience for their Dress  Rehearsals. However Mr. Victor and Mrs. Lilian Hochhauser generously increased  our allocation to 50 seats, so that all applicants applying before the deadline  of May 31st received at least one seat.

I therefore received 50 lots of £2.50 per person = £125.00. We have always  given Mr. and Mrs. Hochhauser a leading brand of champagne in a presentation  case, a two pound box of special hand made chocolates, and an arrangement of  plants in a wicker basket with an over-arching wicker handle. These three items  came to £98.00, so we had £27 over, and with that I bought two bunches of short  stem roses, a tray of 8 Spanish Green Honeydew (Piel de Sapo) Melons and a tray  of Spanish Peaches. I delivered these to their home on Friday August 9th  together with those thank you letters that I had by then received from some of  the members who were at the ballet. I have since forwarded a second batch of  thank you letters.

I received a letter of thanks from Mrs. Lilian Hochhauser (Fellow of the  Royal College of Music), dated 12th August which I  now reprint:-

“Dear Daniel

Victor and I never fail to be overwhelmed by your generous gifts of  delicious fruit, flowers, champagne and chocolates, which provide so much  pleasure for us all.

PARTICULARLY APPRECIATED ARE YOUR MEMBERS LETTERS AND CARDS. COULD I ASK  YOU PLEASE TO THANK THEM ALL FOR US.

We were so happy to learn that you all enjoyed the Sleeping Beauty  rehearsal. Next year – the Mariinsky.

Warmest best wishes from us both,

Lilian”

Well the Hochhausers are amazing. Victor is now 90 years of age and Lilian  is a mere 86. They first brought the Bolshoi to London fifty years ago in 1963.  Let us hope that they can continue to do so for some years to  come”.

Kind regards

Ute
