Victory Day – Monday 9 May 2016 – 11.00am*
To mark the 71st anniversary of the Allied Victory over Fascism, you are cordially invited to join the Trustees of the Soviet Memorial Trust Fund [SMTF] in an Act of Remembrance at the Soviet War Memorial in Geraldine Mary Harmsworth Park, adjacent to the Imperial War Museum, Lambeth Road, Southwark, London SE1 6HZ on Monday 9 May 2016.
The Mayor of Southwark, local and national politicians, diplomats from the embassies of the CIS and other countries, war veterans from Russia and the UK, representatives from a broad range of political and community organisations and many others will gather to pay their respects at the Memorial dedicated to the 27 million Soviet soldiers and civilians who died in the 2nd World War.
* Standard Bearers are asked to arrive by 10.15am and report to the Parade Marshal.
* Other participants, especially wreath-layers, are kindly requested to be present by 10.30am.
* Wreath-layers should report on arrival at GMH Park to Ralph Gibson, the SMTF Hon. Secretary, near the Memorial. You will receive the order of wreath-laying.
There will be limited seating available, which is intended primarily for veterans and older participants (and those accompanying them), as well as one seat for each organisation laying a wreath. The ceremony is expected to last for roughly one hour, so if you are able to stand, this would benefit others less able to do so. The co-operation and understanding of all those who attend on the day will be much appreciated. If you are a veteran or definitely require a seat, then please indicate this in your reply.
There is no parking in the driveway in front of the Imperial War Museum. Limited parking is available on Lambeth Road and nearby streets. All participants are advised to travel by public transport if possible.
I do hope you will be able to join us on 9 May. Please respond to this email as soon as possible. A reply form is attached which indicates the information required.
Finally, on behalf of the SMTF, I would like to thank all those who financially support our work. Our activities depend on the continuing generosity of our friends and supporters. We would greatly appreciate donations – large or small – to carry our work forward. All those organising the event are volunteers, but we must cover the technical and administrative costs of running such a large-scale public event.
If you have any queries regarding the SMTF, or the Victory Day event, please contact the SMTF Honorary Secretary, Ralph Gibson, via email [removed] or tel: 020 7370 3002 (at the Rossiya Segodnya/Sputnik London bureau).
