Isaiah Berlin was the outstanding political philosopher of the 20th century – a man who set ideas on fire with his reasoned rejection of excessive certainty and political despotism. 3 totalitarian dictators Joseph Stalin, Adolf Hitler and Mao Tse Tung were between them responsible for more than 100 million deaths in the 20th century! Isaiah Berlin countered these despots by promoting pluralism and freedom
Isaiah Berlin, who came as a 10 year old boy from Riga, Latvia to London England, took a First in Greats (Latin, Greek and Ancient History) at Oxford, and followed this with a first in PPE just 1 year later! Every honour came his way: The first Jewish academic to be admitted to All Souls College, Oxford, a Professorship, a Fellow of the British Academy, the first Master or President of Wolfson College, a CBE, a knighthood, the only non scientist to be made President of the Royal Society, and conferred with the Order of Merit – OM!
